The French Open will kick off in September after being postponed in May this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s French Open will be held at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, as usual.
Reigning champion Ashleigh Brady has made the difficult decision not to travel to Europe from Australia to defend her title, pointing to current health risks and not being able to adequately prepare for the competition as her top two reasons.

Naomi osaka
As of now, the 2020 US Open champion Naomi Osaka has yet to decide if she will actually participate in the French Open. She has decided not to compete in the Italian Open, which begins on Monday. But this is not something to go into too deep. In any case, she will rest and prepare for the Grand Slam the following week. Osaka dominated the US Open to win her second title in three years. Not only did she defeat her opponent, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, but she did so in a comeback style, winning 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Clay has been a hard surface for Osaka to succeed. This year they are 0-1, after a devastating defeat in the Federation Cup in February, where they lost 6-0, 6-3 to Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain. With a winning percentage below 60%, Osaka will probably not be as dominant and in control as he was in every match during the US Open. If you decide to compete at the French Open, it will be one of those to watch out for. She is never someone to discount.
Who else to take care of
When watching a Grand Slam, it’s almost a guarantee that Serena Williams will be mentioned. The 38-year-old is still in pursuit of her 24th Grand Slam title and is coming off an appearance in the US Open semifinals. She won’t be competing in the Italian Open, but as of now, she appears to be competing in France.
“I will definitely go to Paris.” – Serena Williams
In recent years, Williams has closed his season after the US Open. But due to the pandemic, the clay court season has been moved to September. He hasn’t won a French Open since 2015, but he has three to his name. Clay isn’t Williams’ favorite surface to play either, but he’s still been able to find more success than others.
2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu appears to have second thoughts for the French Open. The 20-year-old is still struggling with her foot injury and has yet to make a final decision on whether or not to participate. She missed defending her title at this year’s US Open.
Best bet
Simona Halep is the favorite to go to Paris, with her French Open odds of +350. She previously won the title in 2018 and is currently ranked number two in the world. She last competed at the Prague Open, which took place in mid-August. Halep only lost two sets in the entire tournament and won the title.

The tournament is an open-air clay surface, which is equal to the French Open. Halep is one of the most dominant players on clay right now. So despite not competing in the American tournaments that have happened, due to the health risks of flying to the United States, she is still considered the favorite to win the French Open.
She is competing in the Italian Open as the clay season begins. Her play in this tournament will be an indication of what we can expect from her in Paris.
Best bet: Halep (+350)
