Africa has managed to sustain more than 80% recoveries from the COVID-19 pandemic over the past month, said John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) during his weekly press conference on Thursday. .
Africa during the last week had a recovery rate of 82%, he said. She also added that the level of recovery has remained stable in recent weeks.
According to the latest figures released by Africa’s CDCP, 1.17 million people have recovered from the disease across the continent. The continent has reported 1.42 million cases so far.
“That is good news for the continent,” he said.
Five countries, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Ethiopia and Nigeria account for 70% of all cases.
During the past week, Morocco, South Africa, Libya, Tunisia and Ethiopia recorded the highest number of new cases.
Nkengasong said healthcare workers have conducted 14 million tests on the mainland and are aiming to test 20 million people by November.
Of the five geographic regions of the continent, Central Africa and North Africa have reported an increase of 57% and 14% respectively.
By comparison, three other regions reported a decrease in the number of cases. East Africa reported 15%, Southern Africa 11%, and West Africa a 14% decrease in the number of cases.
