Addis Ababa – The African Union’s goals of silencing weapons in 2020 are currently hitting a major obstacle following the illegal Moroccan occupation of parts of the territory of the Sahrawi Republic, Sahrawi Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Salek said on Wednesday.
In his speech at the 21st extraordinary session of the AU Executive Council, held by videoconference, Ould Salek stated that the goal that the AU will achieve, which is to silence weapons in 2020, hits a major obstacle due to the illegal Moroccan occupation of parts of the territory of the Saharawi Republic.
This occurs, added Ould Salek, in flagrant violation of the requirements of the constitutive act of the AU, in particular the principles and objectives expressed in articles 3 and 4, which stipulate respect for existing borders, the prohibition of recourse or threatening to resort to the use of force between the member states of the African Union and the need for a peaceful resolution of conflicts.
“There is no doubt that the continuation of the illegal Moroccan occupation of the territories of the Saharawi Republic disregards the basic objectives and principles that constitute the first foundations of the AU,” he said.
“Any indulgence in the face of Moroccan expansionist aggression will open the door to wars and foreign intervention and deprive the continent and its peoples of a climate of peace necessary for sustainable development,” warned Ould Salek.
“The Sahrawi Republic is currently in a war of self-defense and demands that the AU take all necessary measures to force Morocco to end its illegal occupation of parts of the territory of the Sahrawi Republic,” added Ould Salek.
