Adobe has released the latest scheduled update for its Flash Player and announced that it would begin blocking Flash content from running on January 12, 2021. The company also recommended that users uninstall Flash Player before its support ends on December 31. The new update comes months after Microsoft announced that it would no longer support Adobe Flash Player in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer by the end of 2020. Along with Microsoft’s browsers, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are also ready to say goodbye to Adobe Flash. Player, which was once a popular solution for running multimedia content on the Web.
“Adobe will no longer support Flash Player after December 31, 2020, and Adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash Player as of January 12, 2021; Adobe strongly encourages all users to uninstall Flash Player immediately to help protect their systems, ”the company wrote in the Flash Player final release notes.
By blocking the content, Adobe will ultimately prevent users from accessing any Flash content on their web browsers.
As made clear to ZDNet, the mechanism to remove Flash Player completely is not actually part of the latest update and is available for some time, as part of previous versions. This means that you will not be able to bypass the end of Flash Player life even if you do not install the final update. However, the new update includes a changed language to require users to uninstall Flash Player before it stops running completely.
Adobe first announced the retirement of Flash Player in July 2017. The company made that decision in partnership with Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Mozilla. It had also started encouraging developers to adopt modern programming standards and newer software technologies to help ease migration.
Introduced in January 1996, Flash Player brought rich applications to the web world and enabled early Internet users to play and run animations in their web browsers. However, it began to lose its charm with the increasing adoption of HTML5. Developers also began adopting JavaScript over Flash to provide newer experiences.
In addition to expanding HTML5 and JavaScript, Adobe Flash Player faced challenges in maintaining its leadership in the space due to a number of serious security issues and flaws detected in the recent past. Companies like Google and Microsoft had to fix some vulnerabilities on their part to protect their users.
Adobe has provided a Flash Player EOL overview page to help users uninstall Flash Player from their systems. The company has also thanked all the customers and developers who have made the software so successful in the past.
“We are proud that Flash has played a crucial role in the evolution of web content through animation, interactivity, audio and video. We are excited to help lead the next era of digital experiences, ”said the company.
