People with type II diabetes are at higher risk of poor outcomes if they become infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, an expert warned.
Type II diabetes is considered a lifestyle-related disease associated with high blood pressure and being overweight, and it usually appears later in life. The disease has a different mechanism than type I diabetes, which is generally associated with insulin injections.
Both types are equally vulnerable to the virus, but the complicating factors associated with Type II make an infection more dangerous.
“People who are overweight, high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease are especially prone to having a poor outcome when admitted to hospital, ”said Professor Chantal Mathieu, professor of endocrinology at Leuven University Hospital.
People with type I diabetes are less likely to have to be admitted to the hospital if they are infected, he said, but if they are, the result can be serious.
“When you have an infection, like the coronavirus, your blood sugar levels can be altered, “he explained.
“This translates into a higher insulin requirement. Some important tips: check your blood sugar levels regularly, never stop taking insulin and increase the dose if necessary. “
Type II diabetics are less likely to use insulin; In this form of diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin normally, but the body cannot use it properly. However, they can easily control their blood sugar levels and should seek medical advice.
And the standard rules for protection against the virus (hand hygiene, masks, and social distancing) must always be scrupulously followed.
