Cynthia Merhej Announced as First Arab Woman Shortlisted for LVMH Fashion Award
DUBAI: The 20 semi-finalists for the LVMH Award for Young Designers 2021 have been announced, and among the designers chosen is Cynthia Merhej, the Lebanese talent behind womenswear brand Renaissance Renaissance. Merhej, who is based between Lebanon and France, is the first Arab woman to be shortlisted for the prestigious award. She has been selected along with fashion creatives hailing from all over the world, from Italy to Nigeria and from Japan to the United States.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, Merhej’s collection will be displayed in a virtual showroom from April 6 to 11 on lvmhprize.com, along with the collections of the other 19 semi-finalists. Visitors will be able to vote for their favorites, a first for the LVMH award.
“I am very grateful to all the candidates from more than 110 countries for participating in this year’s competition and would like to congratulate the semifinalists,” said Delphine Arnault, Louis Vuitton executive vice president and founder of the LVMH Award in a published statement.
“All the semifinalists have incorporated a responsible stance into their creative vision: use of innovative or traditional materials, upcycling, recycled fibers, artisanal and local approaches. These initiatives echo the change in the fashion and luxury industries, ”he added.
Winner of the LVMH 2021 Award, she will receive $ 352,000 plus one year of mentoring from designers and executives within LVMH.
Meanwhile, the special award winner Karl Lagerfeld will receive $ 176,000 and one year of tutoring.
The new ambassador for the LVMH Award, 23-year-old tennis champion Naomi Osaka, will help select the winning designers for the eighth edition of the award. She will join new additions to the Expert Committee, including part-Palestinian model Bella Hadid and French actress Lea Seydoux, among others.
Read on for the semi-finalists for the LVMH Prize 2021.
