As the new year ushered in a wave of new jobs, one, in particular, caught everyone’s eye this weekend. In its search for a senior software engineer, Microsoft revealed how seriously it is taking the long-awaited redesign of the Windows user interface, according to The edge. The already edited job listing originally described the upcoming changes as a “radical visual rejuvenation of Windows.”
Windows 10X – Windows CentralFull coverage of the highly anticipated Windows X has included everything from the inclusion of Android applications to the so-called “Sun Valley” user interface design. Of course, Microsoft promised us the moon before and came up empty-handed, but this list for the Windows Core User Experiences team suggests that it’s finally working well, or at least doing its best.
“On this team, you will work with our key platform, Surface, and OEM partners to orchestrate and deliver a radical visual rejuvenation of Windows experiences to signal to our customers that Windows is RETURNED and ensure that Windows is considered the best operating system experience for customers.”
A reorganization at the company last year put Panos Panay in command of Windows. The former director of Surface knows that innovative hardware is nothing without software to match and vice versa. That understanding and fervor have clearly lit a fire on the Windows team, and we will discover the fruits of this work sooner rather than later.
Between the pandemic that cemented Microsoft’s seat at the remote workbench (for better or worse) and the modern app icons released last year, it’s clear there’s enough confidence and talent for an impressive debut. Assuming as much attention is paid to what’s under the hood as to the hood itself, of course.
