Dame Judi Dench’s interview in the new issue of Vogue is a charming thing, covering everything from her early theater career to her thoughts on the outbreak. But that is not why you will read it. No, you will read it to witness Dame Judi Dench struggling to describe her Cats costume. She has several attempts to do so. It looked like “a battered and mangy old cat,” he said. Like “a big big orange bruise.” Her cape alone looked like “five foxes fucking on my back”. You feel like Judi Dench isn’t necessarily the biggest cat fanatic.
Dench’s comments are a welcome inclusion to my favorite form of entertainment 2020; Cat stars react to cats. Because you can tell a lot about a person by how they respond to their participation in what is destined to be an eternal blow. Do you support the director? Are they still professionals and overcome the bewildering rumble? Or do they give up any claim to dignity and, like Dench, squeeze it as hard as everyone else?
For fun, I’ve come across some quotes from Cats’ stars, ranging from utter horror to brave professionalism. Your job is to guess who is responsible for each of them, and your reward is to remember that Cats exists.
