May 4, 2020 (Ezega.com) – The death toll from the COVID-19 outbreak in Ethiopia is likely to reach its highest point in late June and early July, the country’s Ministry of Health revealed.
“We have not overcome the worst case scenario that COVID-19 can cause in Ethiopia as such a pandemic will peak in ten weeks or three months on average,” said Dr. Yakob Seman, Director of Health and Related Affairs at the ministry. said to the local media.
The study by the Ethiopian Ministry of Health revealed that some 13 million people are expected to be victims of the outbreak, even after taking all necessary precautionary measures.
“If the government had not taken precautionary measures to stop the spread of the virus, some 27 million Ethiopians would have been victims of the pandemic,” he said.
In the past, these types of outbreaks are the most severe after the rainy seasons, and since this year’s rainy season progresses as in April, the worst pandemic infections will occur in late June or early July.
The ministry is doing everything possible to avoid the worst-case scenario, but the government needs to strengthen its control mechanism, added the director.
The country’s finance ministry anticipated that at least 15 million additional Ethiopians would require emergency food assistance due to the evolution of coronavirus infections in the country.
As a result, the number of Ethiopians requiring urgent food aid will reach 30 million shortly, Finance Minister Ahmed Shide said at a meeting of the Cabinet on Friday.
Ahmed Shide said Ethiopia needs at least $ 1.4 billion to tackle the worsening of the food crisis in the country.
The minister recalled that the country has already requested a total of $ 2.1 billion in grants from the European Union, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and China to address the impacts of the pandemic.
Recently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced a financial aid of $ 411 million to Ethiopia to support the response against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki arrived in Addis Ababa on Sunday for a two-day summit with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations, fight COVId-19 / locust infestation, and regional issues. The presidential entourage includes FM Osman Saleh and adviser Yemane G / ab, it is known.
In related news, Ethiopia has reported two new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the last 24 hours from 1,560 laboratory tests.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country to 135.
