Jawar-Mohammed May 2, 2020 (Ezega.com) – Oromo activist and CEO of Oromo Media Network (OMN) Jawar Mohammed has called for the establishment of a transitional government in Ethiopia as a way out of the political crisis that could confront the country due to postponing the next general elections.

The Ethiopian Parliament postponed the general elections as proposed by the Ethiopian Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), which claimed that its pre-electoral activities were suspended due to restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

This week, the government proposed four alternatives to overcome the “legitimacy crisis” that it could face by not holding the elections next August.

The first was to implement Article 60 of the constitution that gives the Prime Minister the right to dissolve parliament.

The second alternative was to extend the state of emergency that had been declared weeks ago.

The third alternative is a constitutional amendment and the fourth is to ask the Federation Chamber for an interpretation on the matter.

“The four alternatives do not work and lack a legal basis. There should be a political solution and the anticipated constitutional crisis can be avoided through negotiations and the consensus of political parties, ”Jawar told local media.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the Oromo Federal Federal Congress (OFC) of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), and some activists in the Tigray region argued that the sixth general election should be held with the necessary caution against evolving coronavirus infections.

According to Jawar, political solutions range from establishing a transitional government and other political options.

“The four alternatives are neither constitutional nor convincing and, therefore, the government’s legitimacy will end next October,” he added.

Competing political parties demand that TPLF conduct the elections alone. Some politicians claimed that the Tigray regional government, which is increasingly separate from the federal government, does not have a constitutional mandate to hold elections as an independent nation.

It is unclear whether the TPLF is considering holding the elections on its own or becoming more autonomous due to the postponement of the elections.

In a recent interview with Tigray Media House, Maj. Gen. Teklebirhan Woldearegay, one of the top TPLF officials within the federal government and former head of the Information Network Security Agency, said that TPLF fought to free Tigray, not to Ethiopia. This opinion is contrary to the deep-rooted beliefs of many Tigrayans, as well as to the TPLF itself. In fact, a few years ago, none of these individuals spoke of Tigrayan independence. Addis Ababa was her favorite home for a long time, not Mekelle.

Since losing the lead in Addis Ababa, the TPLF has been working to strengthen its base in Tigray. According to some observers, the organization is becoming increasingly militaristic and intolerant with alternative views within Tigray. It remains to be seen whether he will succeed in consolidating his power while still dependent on the federal government and surrounded by hostile forces.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia has reported no new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) from 2,016 laboratory tests conducted in the past 24 hours.

The country also discharged three other COVID-19 patients, bringing the total number of recoveries to 69.

Ethiopia’s currently confirmed cases are 133 with a total evidence count of 19,857.
