Eritrea President visits Ethiopia amid state of emergency

Eritrea’s President Isaisas Afeworki is visiting Ethiopia amid a state of emergency in the country due to the coronavirus situation. Regional and bilateral affairs are taking points between the leaders of the two countries.

Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki is in Ethiopia for a two-day working visit despite the coronavirus situation in both countries.

His Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Presidential Adviser Yemane Gebreab are in the delegation that Isaiah led to Ethiopia this morning.

Eritrea’s Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel confirmed the news in a Twitter message:

President Isaias Afwerki left for Ethiopia this morning for a two-day Summit with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The two leaders will discuss bilateral ties, fight COVId-19 / locust infestation, and regional issues. The presidential entourage includes FM Osman Saleh & Pre. Advisor Yemane G / ab ”

The flight between Asmara and Addis Ababa lasts just over an hour, which means that the President of Eritrea is already in Ethiopia.

Neither the office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia nor the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed information about the visit of the President of Eritrea in this brief.

According to information from the Eritrea Ministry of Information, the leaders of the two countries will discuss bilateral issues, coronavirus prevention and regional issues.

When Ethiopian Airlines delivered coronavirus prevention medical supplies donated by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma to all African countries, Eritrea refused to accept for unspecified reasons.

So far, Eritrea has 39 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and 26 of them have fully recovered from it.

This is the fifth time that President Isaias has visited Ethiopia since the two countries ended the state shortly after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took over as Prime Minister. His last visit was in late December 2019.

This time he visits Ethiopia, as the country is in a state of emergency due to the coronavirus. It is also in a state of what opposition politicians who are critical of the Abiy Ahmed government described as a “looming constitutional crisis” due to the cancellation of the general elections that were scheduled for August 2020.

In a meeting this week with opposition political parties on the next steps to be taken regarding the canceled elections, Prime Minister Abiy hinted that Ethiopia is facing possible military aggression. But he did not specify the country that plans to launch a military aggression against Ethiopia.
