The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is expected later this year, but a new leak suggests a radically different and innovative camera will be incorporated.
Just a few weeks ago the magnificent Huawei P40 Pro went on sale. There is another high-end phone on the way: the P40 Pro + will arrive in a few weeks and already promises to take photography to a new level with a design of five cameras that Includes the first multi-reflection periscope lens on a smartphone. This means that it can further deflect the light path to allow 10x optical zoom without impossibly increasing the volume of the phone.
In early April, exceptional analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities reported that Huawei had a number of interesting features for the Fall flagship. For starters, there would be a 5nm chipset that offers vastly improved performance with better power consumption.
But even more interesting is the camera that is predicted. He believes it will come with a freeform lens. If you search for freeform lenses, you will almost exclusively find references to glasses lenses, and there is still no smartphone with a freeform lens on your camera.
But it’s a great way to solve the problem of how to zoom in on a slim camera. Unlike classic optics, free-form surfaces can be stacked in different ways, allowing you to customize focal lengths. The optical company DynaOptics has a great explanation of the details.
More than that, a free-form lens can achieve wider fields of view, less distortion on wide-angle lenses, and strong low-light performance, from a smaller glass unit. Reducing distortion is crucial to eliminate the fisheye effect, for example.
All of which sounds ideal for an innovative camera system in a high-end smartphone.
Now a leak from @ RODENT950, collected by Notebookcheck, has revealed an image that shows us how everything could be.
The image certainly seems persuasive: the circular frame around the lenses matches the Mate 30 Pro just like the design of the P40 Pro matches the P30 Pro. But the lenses are very different. Note the square lenses.
The writing is not so clear, but I think it says LEICA VARIO-SUMMILUX-H, which is related to what is in the P40 Pro. Vario means that it is a variable lens and Summilux is the Leica brand of lenses. The -H indicates that it is a collaboration with Huawei.
So the next line says 1: 1.6-3.4 / 16-125 ASPH. That means the aperture from f / 1.6 to f / 3.4. Finally, the other figures show the focal lengths, from 16 to 125. ASPH means that the lenses are aspherical.
The filter went on to describe what the cameras are likely to be, saying:
“So what are these Tof cameras and the main 50 mp camera? They are familiar. Then there are two cameras that are square in shape larger than the new Cine lens, which is wider and clearer from the edges of the image as well, and a smaller one is 5x periscope. Again, as before, this is very early. “
That seems correct to me, including the caveat that this is early, so the writing may not be indicative of what Huawei plans to place on the finished unit.
The small lens at the top right is the flight time lens, I would say, and the larger circular is the main sensor. The smallest oblong that is almost square appears to be the 5x zoom found on the P40 Pro.
So that other lens, that must be the freeform lens.
As stated by DXOMark, Huawei uses large sensors, recognizing that there is great potential for great performance, especially in low light. But the downside is putting an ultra wide angle lens in a slim smartphone case. The P40 Pro ultra wide angle is an 18mm lens. Here, it looks like Huawei could be expanding even further, and a freeform lens may be what makes it possible.
There is plenty of time for more leaks and rumors. I will follow up on this so please check back.
