African countries have received more than 29.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine both from the COVAX facility and through bilateral agreements outside of COVAX, the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently said. from Africa).

Africa CDC, the specialized health agency of the African Union (AU), said that as of Thursday, African countries have purchased a total of more than 29.1 million doses of vaccines, with approximately 10.3 million doses administered. .

According to the agency, the majority of those vaccinated include healthcare workers, people with comorbidities and people aged 50 years or older.

The agency also announced an agreement between the UA’s African Vaccine Procurement Task Force and Johnson & Johnson, which was signed earlier this week.

Under the agreement, Johnson & Johnson will provide UA members with access to 220 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, with the option to purchase an additional 180 million doses. The vaccine supplies will be produced at the Aspen Biopharama plant in South Africa.

The latest figures from the CDC of Africa showed that, as of Friday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 4,239,639, and the death toll from the pandemic was 113,142, while 3,794,269 patients have recovered.
