Sony’s next flagship is on the way, apparently and recent leaks suggest that it will be a great device with an impressive display and very intriguing cameras to begin with.
The latest rumors come from Weibo user Zackbucks, as discovered by Aaron Brown on express.co.uk. There are many details in the leaks and they sound very impressive. This is what we know.
Name
Two years ago, Sony launched the Sony Xperia 1 and last year it followed up with the Sony Xperia 1 II. If you think it is a complicated name, you are not alone. It is because there are other phones, like the Xperia 5 and the Xperia 10 in the range. Regardless, it’s no wonder it looks like the next model will be the Sony Xperia 1 III.
4K OLED display
It’s not a surprise either, as the first two Xperia 1 models had gleaming OLED displays, in Sony’s 21: 9 aspect ratio, making it ideal for watching widescreen movies. That’s especially since it seems like we can expect a 4K resolution display, something Sony has put into previous phones but hardly any other manufacturer has tried. It is predicted to be a 6.5-inch screen that matches last year’s screen, so it’s likely to have a high resolution of around 64 pixels per inch.
Fast refresh rate
Visual excellence will be enhanced by a 120Hz refresh rate, so scrolling through a menu list won’t vibrate or jiggle.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888
The top-tier Qualcomm chip will power the Xperia 1 III, which should ensure a smooth and fast experience.
Periscope camera
Sony phones often have sensationally good sensors (Sony makes camera sensors for other phone manufacturers and for itself), but it hasn’t made Sony’s phone the best photographically. That may change with the next phone. Its three cameras are likely to include a periscope camera for the first time on a Sony smartphone.
As you may know, a periscope camera sadly does not mean something that gently levitates out of the body of the phone when you order it. Instead, it makes further magnification possible by using a mirror to reflect light within the body of the phone. Where the Xperia 1 II had a 3x equivalent zoom compared to the main sensor, we can see a larger equivalent zoom, say 5x, this time.
Two more cameras
Rumor has it that the main camera will be a 64MP sensor, while the ultra-wide lens will have a 12MP sensor.
Lots of memory and storage
There are likely to be two versions, one with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, with a more expensive model boasting 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
Spring announcement
Sony traditionally likes to announce its new phones in the spring, and it will go on sale in the following weeks. So could there be an announcement in April for a May or June release?
More details as we get them.
