Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) claims it defeated a division of the Ethiopian army

An image of Getachew Reda (above) posted on social media this week. Not verified if it is from this week. Many are unaware of the identity of the man posing with him, but he does not appear to be a member of the TPLF leadership.

As the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) prepared for war for about three years from Tigray after losing power in the central government in Addis Ababa, the content of the conversation in the TPLF political quarter (including the partisans) was more about projecting victory over what they call “enemy” (openly Ethiopian government but covertly what they would paint as neftegna).

The war did not go as expected by the TPLF. In addition to losing the war in just over two weeks, key leaders such as Seyoum Mesfin, Abay Tsehaye and Asmelash Gebereselassie, among others, were assassinated. Heavyweight figures, including TPLF ideologue Sebhat Nega, were captured in an excruciating and humiliating manner.

What goes viral on social media is a social media update from a fugitive TPLF leader that usually arrives once every few months. That is exactly what happened this week. TPLF spokesperson Getachew Reda tweeted on Monday this week.

He tweeted “Meanwhile, one of those who claimed to have killed me over a month ago was killed and buried in Tigray when his division was defeated last week. The same fate awaits all those who have difficulties in learning from history, recent and remote ”.

Without specifying where exactly in Tigray a division of the Ethiopian Defense Forces was headed. The Ethiopian government did not disclose any military confrontations in the region. Mr. Getachew’s tweet also did not elicit any reaction from the government at the time of this writing.

For some ardent supporters of the TPLF, Mr. Reda’s tweet was proof that the TPLF is winning the war against the Ethiopian Defense Forces and the “Eritrean Troops”, whose presence in Tigray is not independently verified.

Some foreigners who consider themselves experts or journalists seem to have celebrated it as well. And it is given coverage.

Martin Plaut, who describes himself as a “Journalist specializing in the Horn of Africa and South Africa,” covered what the TPLF spokesperson had to say about recent US statements.

“Getachew Reda, advisor to the president of the Tigray government, said that the statement by the US State Department urging Eritrea and Amhara forces to withdraw from Tigray is commendable, but he doubted the Ethiopian government would follow them,” wrote Martin, which is posted on his blog.

Furthermore, Getachew Reda “claims that 8 Eritrean divisions have been sent south of Mekelle to fight the forces of Tigray.”

Mr. Martin went on to report that the Ethiopian government claimed that Mr. Getachew was killed. However, Ethiopian state media did not report that the TPLF spokesperson was killed.
