Google’s decision to move away from developing its own games has canceled “dozens” of Stadia game projects, according to a new report.
Google announced that it was close their own Stadia Games and Entertainment studios earlier this month, ditching his exclusive game plans.
At the time, Vice President and General Manager Phil Harrison did not specify which “short-term planned games” would survive this shutdown, but a new report from VGC suggests that the canceled games include a Yu Suzuki project, a Journey to the Savage Planet sequel, and an episodic horror game from Death Stranding developer Kojima Productions, leading some to believe that this is the cancellation he left behind. Hideo Kojima feels “quite pissed off” last year.
The report also alleges that another partnership with Harmonix “is virtually complete,” but complications around music licensing have left the project in limbo, although Harmonix CEO Steve Janiak reportedly denies this, saying game will hit other platforms if unable to launch. on Stadia.
“Building best-in-class games from scratch requires many years and a significant investment, and the cost is increasing exponentially,” Stadia Vice President and General Manager Phil Harrison said at the time of the announcement.
“Given our focus on building on proven Stadia technology, as well as deepening our business partnerships, we have decided that we will not invest further in bringing exclusive content from our SG&E internal development team, beyond any short-term planned games.”
In related news, during a recent staff question and answer session, Harrison allegedly “specifically pointed to Microsoft’s shopping spree and planned acquisition of Bethesda Software at the end of this year as one of the factors that had made Google decide to close the book on original game development. “
