Fortnite and Rocket League players who bought a loot box have a chance to get both real and fake money for their troubles thanks to a class action lawsuit settlement. The settlement stems from a 2019 lawsuit in which Epic was sued for the use of loot boxes that minors could buy.
However, players will need to keep their expectations in check as certain qualifications are required to receive funds, virtual or not.
Epic Games opened EpicLootBoxSettlement.com on Monday to allow people to submit claims about loot boxes purchased in Fortnite and Rocket League. Anyone who has bought a loot box in Fortnite: Save The World, the tower defense survival cooperative variant of the game and not in the popular Battle Royale version, or Rocket League will automatically receive 1,000 V-Bucks or credits, the in -In-game currency for Fortnite and Rocket League, respectively. This in-game currency will go directly to the account that made the purchase, without the need to file a claim. These purchases must have been made after July 1, 2015 and before the preliminary approval date, which has yet to be determined.
Those who wish to file a claim for real money can do so, but will need to provide a few more details. People who used real money to purchase virtual currency to purchase a game item and believe that the purchase was consumer fraud or a breach of contract and feel they are owed compensation due to that transaction can file a claim . Also, someone who was a minor at the time and bought a game item with their own money and without parental permission can request a partial refund or game currency.
“We stopped offering loot boxes of random items such as Fortnite Loot Llamas and Rocket League Crates because we realized that some players were repeatedly disappointed by not receiving the random items they were expecting,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney at a statement. “Players need to know in advance what they are paying for when making in-game purchases.”
As of now, there is no date on when the claim period will end and it appears that the details of the settlement are still being worked out.
