Deepening Liverpool’s loss to Everton

[ad_1]

A football match happened in front of maybe 100 people at Anfield today that resulted in Everton defeating Liverpool 2-0. It’s the latest low for a Liverpool side that continues to find some downright impressive ways to hit rock bottom. Everton walk away with their first win at Anfield since 1999. Their first win over Liverpool since Roy Hodgson was on the touchline. Records are bound to be broken, I guess.

Everton’s first win over Liverpool in 23 attempts and everyone wants to talk about the collapse Liverpool is having. So, let’s talk about it. Part of their collapse is due to the strangest heavenly events that have seen Liverpool play 18 different central defender pairs in the Premier League. Other causes are of their own free will, such as not blocking the midfield passing lanes at 4 minutes into a game. That’s the thing about the spectacular, it rarely has an explanation. There are so many things that are going wrong in Liverpool right now. The last bad thing? Losing your captain to injury while losing to your literal neighbors. Absolutely vile.

So we have to talk about what went wrong against Everton.

Winners and losers

Winners

Everton? EVERTON?!?!

Today there was only one winner and that was Everton, so that means we all lost. I was 8 years old the last time Everton won at Anfield. I hope I am in my 50s the next time it happens.

Curtis jones

This is like the fifth or sixth league game in a row that Liverpool look considerably worse once Jones leaves. I’m not a scientist, a mathematician, or a doctor, but maybe Jurgen Klopp can stop pulling Curtis Jones off the field.

Losers

The bottom line: another injury

Jordan Henderson is a very good midfielder in his day. Lately he has had to exercise his trade as a central. In general it was good, you probably have an opinion on the position in which he should play. In the 27th minute of today’s game, he was injured. That’s the seventh injury for someone who plays in that position this season. We will probably have a lot of time to talk about what position the captain should play because he probably won’t play for a while.

The attack: Score goals, things of this nature, etc.

Everyone, including myself, points to the insanity of baseline injuries. It’s easy to explain that. What is not so easy to explain is how Liverpool have been almost 9 hours without an open-play goal at Anfield. I really don’t know what to say, other than that I would like to see Liverpool score more goals. That would be cool and good.

Midfield: Why so slow?

Experts and people who are paid a significant amount of money to speak on television say that the first goal was Ozan Kabak’s fault. From my point of view, they are absolutely crazy pants. James Rodríguez has all the time in the world to choose Richarlson because 1. nobody closes him and 2. Neither Thiago nor Gini Wijnaldum block the passing lanes.

Besides not defending very well, none of the players moved the ball fast enough and that is becoming a real problem for Liverpool. Everything seems so complicated right now.

The referee

I don’t like talking about referees, but you do, so this is the space where you can complain about the penalty. It’s also like the sixth or seventh reason Liverpool lost so it freaks out.

I want to end this by asking you a simple question: Would you trade last season for something? It was worth it?

I think it was. We all liked to make jokes about selling our souls for a league title. Well, we finally got one. Liverpool are still champions for a few more months because they won the title. That is something that really happened. This season sucks, but would you change last season to make this season suck less? I would not do it.
