The classic PC dungeon exploration RPG Diablo II is taking on a new life.
Blizzard announced Diablo II Resurrected during the BlizzCon 2021 online event, Polygon reports. The remastered edition includes both the base game and the Lord of Destruction expansion.
It’s been 21 years since the original PC debuted, so it needs some improvements. But Diablo executive producer Rod Fergusson tells Polygon that Resurrected is not a remake. It’s meant to be a faithful recreation of the original, with a few bells and whistles added for good measure.
“We are not reverse engineering it; We are not rebuilding it and trying to make it look and sound like [Diablo 2]Fergusson says. “So there’s a toggle switch, a legacy toggle, that when you push the button, you’ll see behind the curtains, and there’s Diablo 2 in 2D sprites running right there, and you can play like you played 20 years ago.”
This is the second time a Diablo remake has hit the retail market. Blizzard and GOG.com resurrected the original Diablo in 2019. It featured the 1996 classic, with support for Battle.net matchmaking, as well as a “DX” version optimized for Windows 10.
Diablo II Resurrected is on its way to Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC later in 2021.
