Android 12 is getting closer and closer and we’re starting to see more features, tweaks, and additions go public. Although Google has yet to announce anything, there is a lot of buzz surrounding the next version of its popular mobile operating system.
In recent years, Google has moderated the amount of new things that users face in Android versions. We have a few things here and there, like the Android 11 media controls moving to the Quick Settings panel.
However, Google may finally be looking to address a major problem with large phones. Carrying a large one-handed phone, like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, can be difficult for many people. Android 12 could address this by introducing a native one-handed mode.
Discovered by 9to5Google, this upcoming one-handed mode will integrate quite well into Android. Current versions of one-handed modes, like the Galaxy S21, require you to go into settings and enable it. Based on the information 9to5Google saw, users can enable the new one-handed mode with a gesture.
But what will it look like? Most one-handed modes reduce the user interface to make it easier to reach. This usually leads to a smaller screen in the corner of the screen you chose depending on your dominant hand. However, Google could just crush things vertically, creating a fairly compact interface. Other phone makers like Samsung could customize their appearance.
It seems that you can easily exit the mode with one hand, for example, by touching the area outside the reduced screen. 9to5Google also reports that there will be a timeout option, where the mode is automatically disabled when a certain amount of time has passed. Finally, switching applications or opening the keyboard can also disable the mode.
We hope that Google will release the first Developer Preview for Android 12 soon, so we can dig into what’s new.
