The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is a powerful smartwatch that just got even better. The latest software update has added significant functionality to the wearable, including compatibility with Samsung’s growing SmartThings smart home system. Here’s what the update includes and how to get it.
SmartThings support
So why would you want compatibility with SmartThings? Well, it includes SmartThings Find, so if you put your watch somewhere and it can’t find it, it can talk to a compatible device, like an Amazon Echo speaker, and it can help you find it. My main advice is to look under the pillow first.
Hand washing
This is a feature that is already on the Apple Watch. While some smartwatches have offered 20-second timers to encourage all of us to wash our hands properly, Apple’s version can detect what you’re doing with your hand movements, and the microphone detects the sound of soap being crushed between your hands. The new, ready-to-download Hand Wash app does something similar, automatically detecting and timing when you wash your hands.
Improved automatic training recognition
Certain workouts are automatically recognized by the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3. So it’s annoying if it doesn’t detect what you’re doing soon enough. This update promises that when your training involves a rowing, running or elliptical machine, it will detect it faster.
Group hike
Interestingly, this new feature arrived around the same time that Apple introduced its Time To Walk feature on Apple Fitness +. Here, the update provides the opportunity to challenge your friends to a group walking challenge. Since many of us take shelter in one place and are only allowed to leave our homes once a day, a walk seems like a good idea.
How to get it
The update is rolling out now, so check the Samsung Galaxy Companion App on your phone to hook the update and it will download quickly (it’s only 74MB) if it’s there.
