Attention Siri users: you will finally be able to ditch Apple Music and make Spotify, or another third-party music service, your default.
First discovered by Reddit users (via MacRumors), the new feature is part of the iOS 14.5 developer and public betas. So it is not available for everybody still.
If you have downloaded any of the beta versions on your iPhone, you will have the opportunity to change your default music service the first time you ask Siri to play a song.
After downloading the public beta of iOS 14.5, I immediately tested the feature. Instead of saying “Hi Siri, put Mumford & Sons on Spotify” said “Hi Siri, play Mumford & Sons.”
From there, Siri listed three streaming services that are currently on my phone: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. Towards the bottom of the screen, it would ask, “What application would you like to use?”
Once I selected Spotify, it asked for my permission to access my Spotify data. After tapping “Yes”, he started playing a song through the app. Now Siri automatically plays music on Spotify without you having to specify it.
But the setup process has been a bit complicated for some, which comes with the territory of downloading any beta software. For example, Reddit user mvbalan said:
“Whoops hey find OP! It seems to be half done as when I try to play a specific artist, song, playlist or album the default is what I chose in the selection menu but when I say like “play some music” Default is Apple Music “
The creator of the thread, matejamm1, also found that the function doesn’t work very well:
“Yeah, it’s a bit inconsistent, as with all Siri stuff. I just asked ‘Play blue hotel’ after which he offered to choose, then I discarded and asked again and it played directly to Apple Music. , and then the third time I asked, it asked me for access to my Pocket Casts data, which is a podcast app and obviously has no music at all.
The second screenshot was another time 30 minutes later. I only posted it to show that Deezer temporarily became the default music service for Siri. It could be an indication that soon all services will change the default value. “
In the above screenshots, you can see that the feature was buggy for me too, as it included Apple Podcasts as an option (which is obviously a podcast app).
However, I realized that when I asked “ArmChair Expert with Dax Shepard”, started playing the latest episode on the Apple Podcasts app (although it’s further available on Spotify). So since it’s still in beta, you might have a hard time identifying the difference between songs and podcasts right now.
Clearly, Apple still has work to do before the feature is officially released in the final version of iOS 14.5. Regardless, you can at least expect to save some time with those Siri commands every time you want to play music.
