CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The city of Cape Coral says they want to make life a little easier for those who own rental properties.
On February 3, the City Council will discuss a one-time fee of $ 35 for people who own rental properties, including vacation rentals and long-term rentals. If approved, owners would have to complete registration by August 2021.
In an official response via Facebook, the City of Cape Coral says:
“This would allow Code or the Police to address an issue with the person or management company responsible for the property. Locating the responsible party is not always easy. Other cities have rental registration processes and the proposed one-time fee of $ 35 is the lowest among Florida cities with a registration requirement, “said Maureen Buice, City of Cape Coral Public Information Specialist”
Barbara Klare, real estate agent and associate broker for Jones and Company Realty, says there have been issues between landlords and tenants that need resolution.
“The music, the noise and everything else until 4 in the morning. Trash outside, people running crazy, so I’d say this is a minority of rental properties, but there are still problems, ”said Barbara Klare, real estate agent and associate broker at Jones and Company Realty.
Klare says she believes the city’s involvement would make it easier to contact landlords in the event of an emergency.
“It would be beneficial to contact the owner as soon as possible in case of fire, in case of flood, in case of trespassing, hurricane damage, something like this,” Klare said.
According to Klare, although some owners may not like the idea of city involvement, they need to remember that it is a business.
“They’re going to think oh no, I don’t want to register in the city, why do they have to know where I am? They can create a scandal. New shoppers may not even glance at you; however, it is a business and they must run it as such, “Klare said.
