The disaster that was the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 will have made every game developer approaching the release date stop and think “will our game be ready?” For developer Housemarque, the answer to that question was “no” for their upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal.
Sony broke the news of the game’s delay via the official PlayStation Twitter account yesterday. Returnal’s release was originally scheduled for March 19, but as tweet explains, “Returnal has a new release date of April 30, 2021. SIE and Housemarque have made the decision to change the release date to give the team additional time to continue polishing the game to the level of quality players have come to expect from Housemarque. . “
Exclusives are important throughout the life of a game console as a way to attract and retain gamers, but it is even more important for new hardware as you try to build a large user base. Return is a very important game for Sony, which is why a six-week delay to polish would not have met much resistance.
Returnal is a third person shooter game with roguelike gameplay set in a futuristic sci-fi world that tasks the player with surviving on a hostile planet. It’s a game that takes full advantage of the PS5’s Dual Sense controller and uses the 3D spatial audio system to help with immersion. As the video images show, the game looks magnificent and is sure to help sell a lot of consoles, assuming Housemarque uses those extra weeks to polish up well and back up those images with solid gameplay.
