The Balderas Party for Genuine Democracy will hold a demonstration next Sunday in the capital, Addis Ababa.
According to a report by Ahadu Radio and TV, what the party seeks to achieve with the demonstration is to pressure the federal government on national and international affairs.
The arrest of its leaders, the ethnically-based attacks in different parts of Ethiopia, the land grab plan from the Oromia region in Addis Ababa and the border situation between Ethiopia and Sudan are the key agenda on which the party will demand answers. from government authorities.
Adanech Abiebie, the acting mayor, this week dismissed the claim that the Oromo regional state is involved in land grabbing in the capital Addis Ababa. He said that Addis Ababa is bigger than it was and that it would not be possible if there had been a land grab (from the Oromo regional state).
However, the city administration admitted that there has been an illegal transfer of more than 21,000 condominium units in the city and that more than 1 million square meters have been illegally appropriated.
Although Adanech Abiebie led the city administration, he claims that he was part of the investigative study that revealed the transfer of the condominium and the land grabbing, and that he will continue with the police and the attorney general to hold those responsible, Balderas for the Party, accountable. de la Democracia Genuina affirms that the city administration has no legal or moral basis to be part of the investigation.
For the party, the city administration should be investigated and an independent body outside the government should be in charge of the investigation.
The party was at the forefront in opposing what it believes to be the illegal transfer of condominiums orchestrated by the government, the demolition of houses of residents in the city and the land grabbing. For example, the party exposed massive Kebele identity card issues to groups of young people who are believed to have come from the Oromo regional state for a project to change the demographics in the city.
In addition, the party opposed Prime Minister Abiy’s Ahmed administration imposing on unelected mayors who are not known to be city residents or members of the city council.
And the party has paid dearly to advocate for change for the city. Balderas leaders, including Eskinder Nega, have been in jail since July 2020 for alleged planned violence in Addis Ababa.
