The researchers observed that the galaxy was expelling almost half of the gas it uses to form stars, losing about 10,000 suns of gas each year, which means that it is running out of fuel to produce new stars by removing 46% of the total cold gas from the Galaxy. up to this point.

Now it has lost almost half of that gas, and because it is still creating stars at a rate hundreds of times faster than our own Milky, ID2299 will likely die in a few tens of millions of years.

The study, led by Annagrazia Puglisi, lead researcher on the study and a postdoctoral research associate at Durham University in the UK and the Saclay Nuclear Research Center in France, was published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

“This is the first time that we have observed a typical massive star-forming galaxy in the distant Universe on the verge of ‘dying’ due to a massive ejection of cold gas,” Puglisi said in a statement, according to CNN. “Our study suggests that gas ejections can be produced by meltdowns and the winds and tidal tails can appear very similar,” said Emanuele Daddi, co-author of the study and an astronomer at the Saclay Nuclear Research Center in France. “This could lead us to revise our understanding of how galaxies ‘die’. “
