Jamie Carragher hints that the selection of Jurgen Klopp could cause discord in the Liverpool team

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admits that Jurgen Klopp’s recent team selections could cause discord among his team.

The Reds suffered only their second loss of the season Monday night against Southampton, as Danny Ings’ strike was all that separated the two sides.

The result means Liverpool could be overtaken by Manchester United at the top of the table if the Red Devils win their game at hand.

Their plight has not been helped by injuries to star center-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

But Sky Sports insider Carragher insists that playing Jordan Henderson when Klopp has two genuine, younger options available was a poor decision.

Jordan Henderson was chosen as central defender for the 1-0 loss to Southampton

“It’s almost like having a goalkeeper you don’t fully trust. Forget Van Dijk and Joe Gomes, they’re out,” he said.

“I think number one is imperative for Liverpool to sign someone in January, that’s obvious, I’m not saying anything different.

“But I think the fact that they played Jordan Henderson as center back tonight is not going to do much for both guys. [Nathanial Phillips and Rhys Williams] on the bench, confidence-wise, so if you go back to them, how do they feel if there are two midfielders playing there?

“That tells me they won’t feel good if they come back in. Jordan Henderson is not a center-back. He found it difficult today. He did well, he did well considering it’s not his position.

“I can’t see Liverpool winning the league if they don’t bring in a central defender and I said it on my back Everton vs Liverpool with Van Dijk out. It’s going to be very difficult.

“I still think Liverpool have enough quality to go for the title, but I think it is a very difficult question.”

Danny Ings’ goal won the match against Southampton

Carragher also compared Liverpool’s performance to that of Arsenal, who lost 2-0 to Tottenham in December.

“Jordan Henderson just mentioned that he felt Liverpool should have gotten something out of the game, they played well in the second half,” he added. “I do not agree with that.

“When you look at the statistics, you say ‘Liverpool is much better than Southampton’ but we had this argument a few weeks ago when we were talking about Arsenal vs Spurs. Arsenal’s statistics compared to Spurs.

“When a team scores early, the onus falls on the team behind it to do something to get back in the game.

: Naturally, a team leaves. They are not overly concerned with possession. It is up to Liverpool to take the ball. But the most important thing when you are in that situation is not to have more possession, you will always have more possession when you are losing.

“Always happens. It’s what you do with possession. You gave a shot on goal. I can’t think of a coincidence where I thought ‘how did that get lost’ for a Liverpool player. Or the goalkeeper made a great save. “
