LG may not be at the forefront of mobile display technology like Samsung has been with its flexible phone screen, but it definitely boasts of its larger screen innovations. What better time to flaunt that than CES 2021, even if people won’t be able to see the glory of LG’s unconventional panels firsthand. It has already shown off its large transparent OLED and now flaunts a large gaming-oriented display that can bend around a curve and output sound even when it doesn’t have speakers.
Okay, it actually has a speaker, but not in the conventional sense. Just as smartphones have started to embrace “on-screen speakers,” LG is using the same technology to put a 0.6mm thin-film driver to make the screen vibrate and produce sound. In effect, this would almost make it seem like the sound is coming from people and objects displayed on the screen, or at least LG claims.
However, that is not his only trick. As the name implies, the 48-inch OLED screen can go from a flat screen and fold to a 1,000R curved screen as needed. LG suggests that fans may prefer a flat surface to watch, while gamers will prefer a more cinematic curved experience. On the other hand, TV makers like LG have also been pushing curved TVs to non-gamers for the same cinematic reasons anyway.
However, LG clearly targets gamers with the OLED Bendable Cinematic Sound display. That’s thanks to features like variable refresh rates from 40 to 120 Hz and response times of 0.1 ms. The company also promises that this screen is designed and developed for the comfort of the eye, a fundamental feature for long periods of gaming.
The 48-inch LG Bendable Cinematic Sound OLED or CSO Display will be on display at virtual CES 2021, joining its large transparent OLED screen and probably some roll-up ones as well. When you plan to make this gaming display commercially available, it has yet to be revealed, but it will certainly cost a penny.
