Niko hails from Yugoslavia (which is now Serbia) and was born in the late 1970s. According to the Fandom GTA Wiki, it is hinted that Niko’s anonymous father is an abusive alcoholic, and his mother, Milica Bellic, lamented her son’s harsh upbringing but couldn’t help herself. His family was also poor, and the house he grew up in had no electricity until he was 12 years old.

When he was a teenager, Niko joined the military. Bulgarin accused Niko of intentionally spoiling the job, prompting Niko to join the commercial shipbuilding industry to escape its wrath. Eventually, Niko smuggled himself to the United States aboard a cargo ship, wanting to reunite with his cousin and pursue the American Dream, all of which led to the beginning of Grand theft auto 4.
