Addis Ababa, January 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Ethiopian government has deployed planes and helicopters in its fight against a recent locust invasion, an official here said.
On Saturday, Abera Lemma, director of public relations for the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), said the aircraft was being used to assess the extent of the invasion and to spray chemicals in areas affected by the locust, the agency reports. of Xinhua news.
Lemma said the planes and helicopters were being deployed in areas located in the southern regions of Ethiopia, Oromia and Somali most affected by the locust invasion.
Lemma further said there are plans to start a community-led campaign to combat the locust invasion that crossed into Ethiopia from neighboring Somalia.
The MoA has dispatched dozens of experts to assist with efforts to combat the locust invasion that threatens tens of hectares of farmland.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Ethiopia suffered the worst locust outbreak in 25 years in 2020.
Since January 2020, swarms of desert locusts have damaged more than 200,000 hectares of farmland in Ethiopia and affected the food security of millions of people, the FAO added.
Each square kilometer of a swarm can have between 40 and 80 million locusts.
An adult desert locust consumes food roughly equal to its weight, roughly two grams per day, which means that even a small swarm of insects will eat food eaten by six elephants, 20 camels or 35,000 people every day, according to the FAO.
