The end of 2020 was seen as a positive for many, but it was bittersweet in at least one way: Adobe finally officially removed Flash Player.
This was not a surprise, as Adobe had announced that Flash would die three years in advance. It marks the end of a long era, one that in its heyday gave boring teens ways to keep themselves entertained in the high school computer lab. Before you could easily get free high-quality games on your phone, you had to settle for copyright infringing Flash nonsense. It was great.
Anyway, Flash is gone for good and Adobe wants people to remove their computers from any other Flash Player because it no longer receives security updates. “Useless” and “potentially dangerous in the future” makes a bad combination. Fortunately, Adobe has official instructions on how to uninstall Flash Player on both Windows and Mac.
Fortunately, the process seems pretty streamlined and simple. Adobe created a Flash Player uninstaller that you can find on either of those two instruction pages. Obviously, make sure you download the correct one for your operating system first. Once you’ve done that, open the download, click the Flash Player Uninstaller icon, and let it work its magic.
On Mac, this was literally a button press for me. I told the program to remove Adobe Flash Player and it did. You will probably have to close any open browser windows, so make sure you don’t lose any tabs you need. Once this is done, the uninstaller application will inform you by taking you to a web page with a simple message from Adobe:
Flash had a great career and it’s sad to see him go. Running a program to remove it from your computer won’t feel like a true goodbye, but hey, it’s the great memories that count the most.
