Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) Stargazers in Taiwan will have the opportunity to see shooting stars on Sunday as the annual Quadrantid meteor shower nears its peak, the Taipei Astronomical Museum said earlier this week.
The best time to observe the Quadrantids will be between Sunday night and early Monday morning, when they will produce about 110 meteors per hour from a radiant near the North Star as they reach Earth’s atmosphere and burn, said the museum.
While a waning moon could cause some disruption, the museum said, conditions for viewing should remain favorable and the meteor shower could be visible without the use of a telescope.
According to the Central Meteorological Office, astronomers should travel south to get the best view of the meteors, as clearer skies are forecast.
For those staying home, the museum will broadcast live from great stargazing locations such as Yangmingshan in Taipei and Orchid Island in southeast Taiwan on its YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSZYfZhpHUnpGGdgUhiYEEw
In addition, the Taipei city government has warned that there will be traffic controls in Yangmingshan until the beginning of January 4.
