TOKYO – In response to the spread of the new coronavirus, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government decided on Saturday to request the Japanese government to declare a state of emergency, as Nikkei has learned through interviews with several people with knowledge of the situation.

Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo, is expected to meet with Yasutoshi Nishimura, Minister of Economy, Finance and Revitalization, in the afternoon to apply. The number of infected people in Tokyo has increased rapidly. On December 31, a record 1,337 people were confirmed to be infected, the highest number of new infections daily.

The metropolitan government has been asking restaurants and other establishments to shorten their hours and close at 10 p.m., but this has not had a significant effect, and officials have now decided to ask the government to issue a statement so that it can take stronger action.

The government declared a state of emergency in April, which was lifted across the country on May 25.
