Kenyan Senate takes firm stance on doping in athletics

Kenyan senators unanimously approved the 2020 anti-doping amendment bill. Once enacted by President Uhuru Kenyatta, athletes involved in doping will face strict measures, including jail time. This follows several cases in which Kenya’s top athletes were found to have used banned substances. Big names include marathon runner Jemima Sumgong, who tested positive for a banned substance in 2017 and was banned for 8 years, long-distance runner Salome Biwott, who received the Unit’s maximum 8-year doping ban. Integrity Award in 2019. Three- World and Olympic 1,500 meter champion Asbel Kiprop received a 4-year doping ban in 2019, following an out-of-competition event in November 2017. His ban dates back as of February 3, 2018. This amendment bill follows a call by the Athletics Integrity Unit to budding young athletes to avoid substances that could lead to doping violations.
