In his recent Twitter post, the former United States Under Secretary of State for African Affairs, Herman J. Cohen, clearly blurted out:
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Nobel Peace Prize should be revoked. Unprecedented, but definitely demanded in this case, having rejected political solutions in Tigray, and in view of the atrocities and unnecessary wars perpetrated by his army against his own citizens.
Before even remembering why Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed received the coveted Nobel Peace Prize, let us lay out the events that triggered the tragic conflict in Tigray. The savage attack on the Northern Command’s Ethiopian National Defense Forces was provoked by the TPLF clique as accused by the Ethiopian government and corroborated by the (former) senior TPLF clique official who described it as a preemptive strike .
The painful but irrefutable facts
The heinous attack on the Northern Command included the ethnic execution of officers and soldiers while in their beds; cut throats and bodies; cutting the breasts of female soldiers; crashing prisoners with heavy trucks and spraying them with bullets as they fled. After the “thunderous” attack, the cabal officer boasted that the reality on the ground has now changed and, victoriously but mistakenly, declared the TPLF an invincible force, better armed and equipped than all the Federal Forces put together.
While this remains the harsh and irrefutable fact, the distorted and inaccurate media stories, enabled by rogue shenanigans and hired gunmen, continue unabated. What’s more distressing is that there seems to be no shame in doing it, and repeatedly. A number of leading experts, armchair analysts and salaried agents in universities, think tanks and the media have largely succeeded in distorting and obscuring the facts and effectively but tragically misleading victimization. The power of money looted by the clique has clearly triumphed.
Mr. Cohen, the old guard, who brokered the infamous negotiations that put the TPLF clique into power in the 1980s, and rarely spoke out against it during his 27-year reign of terror, now deceptively blames Abiy for rejecting “political solutions”. in Tigray ”. One of Mr. Cohen’s most pathetic arguments to revoke the irrevocable award now stands as the alleged rejection of political solutions in Tigray.
For the simple fact of doing so: How is it that, once the winners are crowned with such an award, they are forced to accept all the political positions and proposed solutions, even when they do not like them? If Mr. Cohen is seriously concerned about the political solutions and problems in Ethiopia, he has had ample opportunities, including those rejected by the clique, one not long ago.
Blatant and vicious dishonesty
The second dishonest charges against Abiy are simply unpleasantly tragic and painful. Mr. Cohen accused Abiy of “unnecessary atrocities and wars perpetrated by his army against its own citizens.” Any unbiased observer would quickly ask: What is the “unnecessary warfare waged by your Army”?
The same forces that Cohen allowed to seize control of Ethiopia in the 1990s, but were powerless in 2018, had been camping in Tigray for two years preparing and plotting to wage war against the Federal Army and the people of Ethiopia. . And when they did, they massively, savagely, “thunderously” and cowardly attacked the Federal Forces, the nation’s top guardian, if Mr. Cohen cares to know.
Since when and how is it that the defense of a nation, carried out by a chief of its armed forces, is considered “unnecessary” and “a war against its citizens”? In fact, to do otherwise would amount to a dereliction of duty of epic proportions. Mr. Cohen seems to have a diminished regard for our intelligence, unless, of course, he is also “encouraged” by the forces of the clique now fighting for any sympathetic voice anywhere. Cohen’s malicious tweet is not simply condescending, but blatantly dishonest and downright cruel.
In fact, if Abiy was to be blamed, it was his boundless patience with the TPLF clique that had boldly challenged him; but more so, conspiring against him by openly building massive rebel forces under his nose. You can also add its meticulous restrictions on disclosing the seriousness of the atrocities committed by the clique against its troops and citizens.
You may want to ask Mr. Cohen if he has heard of the My-Kadra genocide. If you did, it may take a while to figure out how to pronounce it as Abiy’s atrocities.
Mr Cohen may need to be counseled to quietly walk away with dignity and to cease and desist from the “advice” and “analysis” on Ethiopia, where he was disastrously wrong time and again. Unfortunately, it may not be easy to teach a silly old dog a worthy new trick.
In conclusion: the revocation of the Nobel Prize
For the sake of facts, the Nobel Peace Prize is won with a proven track record of honors; therefore, it is not an advance on a future deed. Dr. Abiy was deservedly recognized for his exceptional contribution to peace in the region and the agreement with Eritrea. In the words of the Nobel Committee, “An important premise for progress was Abiy Ahmed’s unconditional willingness to accept the arbitration ruling of an international border commission in 2002.”
Interestingly, from the “deranged” leader in America’s highest office to those who serve humanity in the heinous trenches of the world, many have been seen groaning, salivating, and raving about this particular award given to Abiy. Certainly, while his award is a proud moment and an achievement for most Ethiopians and Africans alike, its revocation, while impossible, would not be a big deal.
The only thing that the pathetic effort of the UN (Nobeling) of Abiy cannot achieve is the return of the cash prize that it may have already dispensed with to build schools. Otherwise, the Nobel Committee may need to rewrite its reimbursement guidelines in the future.
Be that as it may, one wonders if the Nobel Peace Committee places demands on its deserving graduates to turn a blind eye when an adversary is dead and will strike him savagely, furiously and, yes, “thunderous.” I, for my part, will.
