Apple iPad Pro with eye-catching display due in weeks, claims report

It has been a great year for iPad. A new version of the entry-level model, an updated iPad Pro with LiDAR scanner, and a radically different iPad Air. But it looks like there will be more innovations in 2021, and soon.

A new report from DigiTimes says that a miniLED display will be introduced on the iPad Pro in the first quarter of 2021. That means anytime from this Friday, January 1 to March 31. Overall, I’d say I’m more likely to be closer to the latter than the former, especially since Apple has a penchant for updating its iPad range in March for its spring releases.

Still, if it’s true, it’s a pretty quick update to the iPad Pro, which hasn’t been previously updated in just 12 months between iterations. Given that formidably accurate Ming-Chi Kuo has previously said that an iPad miniLED would arrive in the first half of 2021, this new claim is consistent with Kuo, although it looks like it will be released sooner rather than later. Again, this fits in with Apple’s favorite spring release schedule, although a June announcement at WWDC isn’t impossible.

The reason miniLED is so exciting is that it offers great looking display technology. Like OLED, each pixel is illuminated independently, so there is the possibility of exceptional contrast, deep black tones and rich colors. Unlike OLED, it can be really bright, so that could mean a screen that looks better than OLED in bright situations.

It’s worth noting that DigiTimes’ suggestion is that the new display technology is expected to be for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, not the 11-inch version. This would be a change for Apple, where previously both Pro sizes were almost identical, but for size and price.

Could this suggest a simplification of the iPad range, with the iPad Pro 11in being phased out now that the iPad Air has grown to boast a 10.9-inch display? Personally, I think Apple will be interested in the 11-inch iPad Pro continuing as a key part of the range. The screen size is far from the only differentiation between the Air and Pro levels. It is more likely that at the same time as the supposed 12.9-inch iPad Pro miniLED, the internal processor will be updated and that an 11-inch version will benefit. of the same chip update.

Also intriguing is the idea that the next iPad Pro could complement the current Face ID system with Touch ID mounted on the iPad Air’s power button.

Production chain predictions are always interesting, but more rumors will need to surface before we can be sure of the details. Still, this rumor adds to the clamor that suggests miniLED is coming.
