“… Abiy Ahmed did not initiate the conflict; in fact, he had been widely criticized for his leniency towards the TPLF clique… ”The Queen of Sheba

In a recent Aljazeera interview (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uc-451qPrxE), the news anchor asked his guest, Mr. Martin Plaut, the self-proclaimed Horn analyst a question. Africa: “Why, if so, did Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed misjudge the situation in such a dire way? [when he declared an operation against the TPLF]? “Mr. Plautt, one of the best known apologists for the TPLF clique, pontificated unscrupulously attributing the Prime Minister’s” horrendous “misjudgment to two reasons.

Mr. Plaut proclaimed: “He first thought that he had the Ethiopian Federal Army force behind him, an air force that the Tigreans could not respond to, and that he also had the Amhara militia with him.” He continued: “So I had a very powerful force and then from the north I had allies in Eritrea who have also been involved in this conflict, so [was] essentially attacking from three directions from the north, from the east, and from the south, and he thought he could crash the tigers. “

Plaut’s second answer was particularly of a lesser degree even for a self-proclaimed Horn analyst. “The second is,” he snapped, “is a Pentecontalist and believes very much that positive thinking is enough. It will help you ”and he concluded abruptly:“ so, in essence, there were two reasons for this ”.

It is very revealing how an “established” analyst would wish to be so visibly divisive and downright dishonest. First of all, Abiy Ahmed did not initiate the conflict; in fact, he had been widely criticized for his leniency towards the TPLF clique. Abiy launched into a response only after the Northern Command was savagely attacked by the clique on the night of November 3, 2020, leaving him with no choice but to defend the Army and prevent the country from disintegrating. In fact, the preemptive strike was already admitted by a high-ranking cabal official in a televised interview. Contrary to the analyst’s statement, Abiy needed to decide to act regardless of her power base, because she was left with no options, absolutely none.

Mr. Plaut was evidently also going insane to apologize for the clique’s humiliating defeat when he listed the “air force that the Tigreans could not possibly respond to.” In instant contradiction and blatant prejudice, he attempted to resurrect the clique by taunting Abiy that he “thought he could crush the Tigreans” as if they were not. Furthermore, in a dubious narrative, he chose to omit the Afar militia that was an active part of that long list, when he only selectively mentioned the Amhara militia, which indeed played a key role in supporting the federal army. In fact, Oromia and the Somali militias also played an important role in supporting the government and the federal army.

“The tradition in Tigre is to go to the hills … and fight”

On his second daring question, the host continued, “Do you think the Tigreans will keep backing down? And if they try, can they keep it? ”

“I think it is a very difficult question to answer,” the good analyst admitted shyly, but quickly made up groundless premises. He was wrong: “The indications at this time are that there is still fighting and it is impossible to know how long they will continue, although they had more than 100, it could be 150 thousand men in arms.” In a flagrant incitement, he continued, “the tradition in Tigre is to go to the hill and fight from the hill so as not to try to take over the cities; if they do, they have a long history of doing it and there is no reason why they cannot continue. ”

Asking himself a question, the analyst continued: “The big question is what Sudan will do because all its supplies of essentials such as fuel, food and ammunition will have to come from Sudan. Can that be sustained? Will Sudan allow that to continue? We don’t know that. “

Mr. Plaut vowed to mislead the global community by claiming “that there is still fighting going on in the region” when he knows all too well that this is a final clean-up operation to subdue the last vestiges of the clique. Furthermore, in his bold statements, he incited the Tiger “to go to the hills and fight from the hills. [and] do not try to retain the cities ”. He then bragged that they “have a long history of doing it” and cruelly suggested that “there is no reason why they cannot continue.” After spitting out that poison, he then subtly hinted at Sudan’s possibilities to help sustain the conflict.

The presenter continued: “So clearly, this can never start as a police operation; that was how it was labeled; it sounds like you’re painting a picture that describes this descending into almost a civil war. “The analyst boldly contradicted,” Well, no, it’s not a civil war; this is an international war. “Then he was quick to validate that:” Already have Eritreans involved; the United States has made it clear that it believes Eritrean forces are involved; Britain, sort off-the-record accepts that this is the case; so has the European Union. There is little indication that it is not true; Eritrean forces are involved so now you’re in, this is now [sic], a large-scale war on three fronts involving more than one country that is terribly dangerous for the Tigers but also for Ethiopia because they also withdraw troops from Somalia that destabilize Somalia. They removed people from other areas that are tense like Benishangul, who has now seen more than a hundred people killed in ethnic violence. How much can be deposited at Abiy Ahmed’s door? Well, I think a lot ”.

The hollow dialogue

Horn’s good analyst in his pronouncement conveniently forgot the explicit denunciation of the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the TPLF clique for the savage attack by the army and the firing of rockets against Asmara, in their futile attempt to internationalize the conflict. If there was any attempt to internationalize the conflict, it was unambiguously unleashed by the clique, which has nevertheless failed miserably, much to the chagrin of Mr. Plaut and other shenanigans. The Ethiopian government never denied that its forces withdrew to Eritrea when the army came under a massive and coordinated attack. When the clique forces overpowered the army forces and expelled them to Eritrea, naked and barefoot, the Eritrean forces dressed them and gave them provisions. This was officially declared.

In the shadow of crocodile tears, the analyst tried to describe the conflict as “terribly dangerous for the Tigers but also for Ethiopia because they also withdraw troops from Somalia that destabilize Somalia.” Mr. Plaut does not admit that the removal of the TPLF clique – which he combined with the Tigrayan people – from the Ethiopian ruling political power is far, far from being “terribly dangerous”; indeed, it was a boon to the masses of tormented Ethiopians who have been yearning for its elimination for years, if not decades. What is even stranger is that the same analyst who seems to be too concerned about the “Tigreans” (to be read as the TPLF clique) —and by pretentiously adding Ethiopians to the list— was hinting at the continuation of the violence. to fight in the hills ”.

What is conspicuously missing from this hollow interview is the utter lack of interest in a return to normalcy in Tigray. The restoration of transport and communications; resumption of the provision of health, education and other services; provision of humanitarian supplies; delivery of arms by militias, in thousands; preparations for the return of the displaced; The installation of provisional regional and zonal administrations was never mentioned. These critical developments were of no interest to either Aljazeera or her subject.

In conclusion: way forward

In reviewing reports on the conflict, many expressed discontent with Aljazeera and a large number of its analysts, including Mr. Plaut, for their overt bias, misleading information, and twisted analysis intended to favor the TPLF clique while undermining Ethiopia’s interest and its global position. . In fact, Aljazeera was not alone in this misdeed; The mainstream media, including the BBC, Deutche Welle and the New York Times, have been implicated.

It is time for Ethiopia to take a hard look at this deplorable chapter and to respond systematically by formulating a robust global media strategy, without further delay.
