After the celestial event of the Christmas Star or the Great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturnsky watchers can get excited about the upcoming Cold Moon 2020 lunar event. The last full moon of the year, also known as the Cold Moon, will also be the highest full moon of the entire Gregorian year. Interestingly, the last and thirteenth full moon of 2020 will be visible on two different days. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the full moon’s peak illumination is assumed to occur on Wednesday, December 30 at 9:00 am IST (Tuesday, December 29, at 10:30 pm EST). The Almanac says that people can start to see the December full moon just before sunset.

What makes Cold Moon 2020 special?

The Cold Moon will have a clearly high trajectory across the sky. This makes the moon visible above the horizon for a longer period of time.

It is also called the ‘Long Night Moon’ as the event occurs on one of the longest nights of the year. This is because the date is quite close to the winter solstice. As it takes place just after Christmas, the full moon is also called the ‘Moon after Yule’ in Europe. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name Cold Moon has seeped into some traditions observed by Native Americans. The name refers to the “frigid conditions this time of year”.

According to a report by Forbes, the moment when the Moon reaches its maximum illumination is behind the balloon that detects the Cold Moon on two different dates. While Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa will have a full moon on December 30, both South America and North America will have it a day earlier, on December 29.

After this, the full moon will appear to be a full moon for the next three days.
