This year, a local Cache Valley ice sculptor appears in a Lifetime Christmas movie.
John Simpson, owner of Culinary Concepts Catering, said he was surprised to receive a phone call from director Peter Sullivan.
“I thought it was a joke, like maybe a friend, right?” Simpson said. “I’ve been sculpting for 27 years … He didn’t interview me. He didn’t do any of that.”
“The Christmas Edition” follows the life of a journalist who moves to Alaska to run a small newspaper, falling in love along the way.
Simpson’s role is as a stuntman, acting as “Finn” wielding a chainsaw during an ice sculpting competition.
The movie was shot in Huntsville, Utah over the summer.
“It was August! So everyone is running around, spraying foam on the ground to make it look like snow. Everyone is in coat,” Simpson said. “We’re literally dripping with sweat, wiping ourselves off right before the scene, and then you can hear Peter (Sullivan) in the background saying, ‘Okay, it’s really cold!'”
Simpson said his goal was to make Utah proud.
He was allowed to keep the leather jacket that he wore during the scene, which was signed by members of the cast.
“They take it very seriously,” Simpson said. “They were all so nice. They were all so wonderful.”
