SEVEN-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton said Black Lives Matter gave him “extra push” to win races.
He used his spot as a guest editor on BBC Radio 4’s Today show to talk about the murder of American George Floyd, which sparked BLM protests around the world.
The 35-year-old Mercedes driver said: “This year I had this extra push to get to the end of those races.
“It was a different impulse than what I had in the past.
“Get to the end of those races first so I can use that platform and shine the light as brightly as possible.”
Hamilton was seen at the races wearing T-shirts and masks with anti-racist slogans and knelt on the winners’ podium.
The winner of Sports Personality of the Year was asked if he was afraid of how people would react if he took a public position.
He insisted: “There is no way I can keep quiet.
“And once I said that to myself, I had no fear.”
The sport’s only black driver said many other young “kids of color” deserved a chance to advance.
But he said: “The opportunity is not the same for them.”
