If you just got a new iPhone 12, Apple Watch, or iPad, you may not have gotten immediate satisfaction – Apple was having some iCloud problems. It’s likely the result of a high volume of people trying to set up or update iCloud accounts after the Christmas holiday gift delivery.
The problem started early on Christmas Day, according to the iCloud account and the login entry on Apple’s system status page. More than a day later, late Saturday morning Pacific Time, Apple’s system status page indicated that the problem with the storage service it remained “ongoing”. But at 2pm PT on Saturday, the iCloud issue was marked as “resolved.” No details were given on how widespread the problems might have been, only that “some users were affected.”
The company also noticed problems with signing in with Apple ID. In a reply from Twitter later on Christmas Day to a query from an Apple user looking to set up an iPad and a HomePod Mini, Apple Support acknowledged issues, saying the company was “experiencing high capacity right now, which is affecting its ability to configure iCloud.” The Apple Support tweet read: “Please try again in a couple of hours.”
The holidays are often a busy time for device activations as people unwrap gifts of phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart speakers, and other electronic devices and look to set them up right away.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
