The leader of the Baladera Party for Genuine Democracy, Eskinder Nega, appeared in court on Friday in Lideta, in the capital Addis Ababa.

He appeared alongside Sintayehu Chekol, Keleb Seyoum, Askale Demisew, and Getenet Bekele (who is out on bail).

They all pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor told the court that he has witness evidence and asked the court for the witnesses to give their testimony.

And the court ruled that the witnesses would give their testimonies on April 7, 2021. For Eskinder Nega supporters and activists, the court’s decision to make Eskiner Nega wait another four months in prison just to hear the testimonies of the witnesses it is politically motivated.

They see it as a plot to remove Eskider Nega from the next election. There is high expectation that Eskiner will win the elections in Addis Ababa, at least if he is allowed to participate in the elections. Ethiopia’s Electoral Board announced on Friday that the next general elections will be held in early June 2021, but candidates will need to register before then.

The government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrested him on the grounds that he planned acts of ethnic and religious violence in the capital Addis Ababa following the assassination of Hachalu Hundessa in late June.
