PARIS, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) – Three policemen were shot dead and another wounded in central France on Tuesday, local media reported.

Police officers, who were responding to a call about domestic violence in a remote village in the Puy-de-Dome department, were shot by a 48-year-old man when they tried to rescue a woman who had found shelter on the roof of a house, the reports said.

“They (the officers) are our heroes,” French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted on Wednesday.

The man set the house on fire, which local firefighters were trying to put out, and the female victim was rescued, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said.

Local media reported in an update that the man was found dead after “an apparent suicide” about 1.5 kilometers from the home on Wednesday, with “several knives and an assault rifle.”

The woman was reportedly safe and the officer who was injured while saving her was taken to hospital.

The minister noted that domestic violence was the worst attack in the history of French security forces apart from terrorist attacks. Final product
