For many, 2020 is a year to forget. TikTok, however, wants to relive the last 12 months in 60-second videos.
It has been a banner year for the Chinese video-sharing social network, which rose to prominence when people around the world were forced to stay indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now TikTok wants to celebrate that success with the people who helped him achieve it. The company announced Monday “the opportunity to take a personal walk down memory lane” with its first recap of “Year on TikTok.”
“From the most-played tracks to your favorite creative effects, Year on TikTok lets you revisit some of the memories that define TikTok in true TikTok style,” read a post on the company’s blog. “Each custom video highlights your 2020 TikTok favorites and even shares some of the best ‘vibes’ based on the types of content you liked the most.”
Are you nostalgic for the last 365 days? Make sure you are running the latest version of the app, then click on the icon in the For You feed or Discover page banner. Share your year on TikTok to unlock a special 2021 badge, then add it to your profile picture to help ring in the new year.
“Whatever your vibes, we are here for it and there is a community waiting for you who feel the same,” the blog read. “We are inspired daily by the resourcefulness and heart of our community, and we’re excited to help celebrate all the ways that made TikTok a joyful and fun place in 2020.”
New and old users can also take advantage of the Year on TikTok: Top 100 review, released earlier this month. “It has been an honor for us to watch these videos and creators grow and share what have become the iconic, sometimes even life-changing moments of 2020,” Acting Director Vanessa Pappas said in a recent statement.
“TikTok is here to bring joy, and with the year we’ve lived through, I’m thrilled to take a journey down memory lane,” she continued, “and celebrate the myriad ways the TikTok community helped us come together, bridge the divisions, and find lightness and excitement when we need it most. “
