Apple aims to produce an autonomous electric car by 2024.
The iPhone maker has set its sights on launching a “next-level” passenger car powered by its own battery technology, sources told Reuters.
The Silicon Valley giant started working in the auto industry in 2014, but its Project Titan has made slow progress since then.
The company has now come up with plans to use a new battery design that could “radically” reduce cost and increase the vehicle’s range, said a person familiar with the design.
Elon Musk’s Tesla is now the world’s most valuable automaker, but it took 17 years for the company to make a profit from its electric cars.
And industry insiders say the tools to produce a car present a huge manufacturing challenge for Apple.
“If there is a company on the planet that has the resources to do that, it is probably Apple. But at the same time, it is not a cell phone, “a former Project Titan employee told Reuters.
Insiders say that Apple would likely partner with a manufacturing partner to produce the AppleCar.
The company plans to use a “single cell” battery design that allows more active material to be placed inside the battery and increases the available range.
You are also looking at the chemistry of the lithium iron phosphate battery for your car, which is less prone to overheating.
“It’s the next level,” the source told Reuters. “Like the first time you saw the iPhone.”
Previous reports had indicated that Apple was more interested in developing autonomous driving technology rather than building an entire car itself.
While the company expects to start production in 2024, the Covid pandemic could delay launch until 2025, Reuters reported.
Apple declined to comment on the report.
