Ethiopia’s Federal Police Commission said Monday that it has recovered more firearms during a search operation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. The number of weapons seized is not specified.
The Federal Police were said to have coordinated with the Ethiopian Defense Force during the search effort and dozens of individual assault weapons and group weapons.
In addition to law enforcement operations, the police are working to restore normalcy in the region, according to a report from the Federal Police.
Last week, the Tigray interim administration introduced a deadline for those who are armed (either by the TPLF or on their own) to hand over firearms to members of the Ethiopian Defense Forces.
December 15 was the last day for people to return their weapons voluntarily, licensed or otherwise. Since then, law enforcement agencies, including members of the Ethiopian Defense Forces, have started house-to-house searches to disarm those who were armed. According to the provisional administration, it was an action that seeks to restore peace in the region.
Some five hundred militia groups in Enderata returned unarmed last week on a voluntary basis.
