If an all-new Taylor Swift album wasn’t enough to satisfy your musical hunger this month, you’ll be happy to hear that Ed Sheeran also stepped up and surprised us with a new track called ‘Afterglow’.

Sheeran first hinted at the news of a new song on Sunday when he teased a Christmas surprise on Instagram. “Tomorrow at 11 am GMT. A Christmas present ”, he published, accompanying an image of a self-made painting, which we now know is the unique work of art.

Then he went ahead and dropped the track on the ‘gram last night. And boy, is a present waiting for you?

“Hi guys. ‘Afterglow’ is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song that I love and I hope you like it too. Enjoy! have a happy and safe holiday break and New Years. Back to daddy land for me now, ciao x, “he posted.

It’s the first song Sheeran has released in over a year, who has gotten his hands full after welcoming daughter Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran with his wife, Cherry Seaborn, in September.

Sheeran’s latest release was ‘Collaborative Project # 6’ in July of last year before announcing that she would be taking a break from the world in December 2019 in an Instagram post.

“Hello everyone. I’m going to take another break again. The Divide era and tour changed my life in many ways, but now that it’s all over, it’s time to get out there and see a little more of the world,” the post read.

The new father actually took a similar break after winning a Grammy 2016 Song of the Year for ‘Thinking Out Loud’. He shared with Rolling Stone that during this time he skipped the various after parties and headed to Japan to “eat strange food, soak in hot springs and ski.”

Because this track reminds us how much the world needs Ed Sheeran, we hope this new tune hints at the end of Sheeran’s current hiatus.
