Benyam Getachew, just five years old, traveled to the Tigray region (from Woliso) before the war against the TPLF broke out to visit his father, Lieutenant Getachew Boredan.

On November 4, the TPLF attacked several bases of the Ethiopian Defense Force’s northern command. Benyam Getachew and his father, along with thousands of EDF members, were arrested and made “captives”.

As the war against TPLF escalated and caused catastrophic losses, TPLF had to flee Mekelle using the thousands of captives as human shields.

Lieutenant Getachew Boredan had to walk hundreds of kilometers carrying his son, Benyam Getachew, and with the help of his companions.

“At one point in the TPLF, the people who were driving alongside the captives asked Lieutenant Getachew to leave their son with them in the car. I said no. He will stay with me. “

A little later, the Ethiopian Air Force launched an operation to rescue the captives. When the airstrike began, Lieutenant Getachew Boredan took his son away to carry a shield in a rocky area. Benyam asked his father what was going on. He told his son “Abiy[the prime minister] he’s sending the air force to save us. “

And the car in which he was supposed to take Benyam was destroyed in the airstrike. That’s when Benyam told his father that he would be in the air force when he grows up.

Those close to Benyam during the trip were surprised that Benyam was comforting the soldiers with courageous comments about their situation.

The story was broadcast on state media, Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), and Ethiopian Air Force commanders, including Major General Yilma Merdasa, watched it. They want to care for the boy until he is old enough to join the Ethiopian Air Force.
