If your Cyberpunk 2077 save file gets too large, it may get corrupted

I can barely go anywhere on the internet without seeing another wild, hilarious, or frankly strange mistake since Cyberpunk 2077. It’s a buggy game, and developer CD Projekt Red has already released two hotfixes to try and fix some of the issues. However, a problem that is starting to emerge is not at all fun: some players report Cyberpunk 2077 Saved files get corrupted if they exceed a certain file size (via Eurogamer).

If you Cyberpunk 2077 save is corrupted, apparently you will see this message when you try to load the game: “save data is corrupted and cannot be loaded”. This is what it looks like:

While it is unclear what might be causing the save files to be corrupted, it appears that it can happen when the save files reach 8MB in size. Crossing that 8MB threshold is when the save file got corrupted for a Redditor, in their testing. There are also several people on the CD Projekt Red forums reporting that their save files larger than 8MB are corrupted.

In a GOG.com support document on the corrupted save message, CD Projekt Red says that “unfortunately the save is corrupted and cannot be recovered.” To avoid seeing the message, the company recommends using older storage and “keeping fewer items and crafting supplies.”

Theoretically, if you Cyberpunk 2077 The save file is over 8MB in size, you have spent dozens of hours playing the game, and collected many items. If I had a corrupted save partly because I collected too many things (in a game that is dirty with things to pick up), I know I would be extremely disappointed.

CD Projekt Red says the save file size limit “could be increased in one of the future patches” in the GOG.com support document. But even if that spike occurs, saved files that are currently corrupted will still be corrupted, the document says. If you are experiencing corrupted saves, a moderator on the official CD Projekt Red site Cyberpunk 2077 forums have offered some suggestions on how to upload saved backups that you can try.

The study Has promised to release two large patches for Cyberpunk 2077 next year: one in January and one in February. The company may make changes to those patches to help prevent files from being corrupted. CD Projekt Red did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The edge.
