December 19, 2020 (GADAREF) – The Sudanese army regained control of the new border areas from the Ethiopian militias in Amhara, as the head of the Sovereign Council returned to Khartoum after spending three days with his troops.

Ethiopian troops ambushed a Sudanese force patrolling the border area and killed an officer and three soldiers on the night of December 15.

After the attack, the Sudanese troops concentrated on the border with Ethiopia and al-Burhan announced from Gadaref his readiness to defend the country against any attack.

Military sources told the Sudan Tribune that heavily armed ground troops, including Rapid Support Forces, were dispatched to Sudan’s eastern border with Ethiopia.

During his three-day stay at the eastern command headquarters in Gadaref, al-Burhan personally supervised the troop deployment operations.

After his return on Saturday, the army chief of staff and his aides for operations and supplies remain in Gadaref to follow up on ongoing operations.

Unconfirmed reports say clashes occurred on Saturday between the two sides and some wounded soldiers were taken to Gadaref hospital.

The Ethiopian army and the Amhara militiamen are angered by the deployment of the Sudanese army in the border areas. Their presence on the border hampered military operations across Sudanese territory against the TPLF.

Some Ethiopian lawmakers went to accuse the Sudanese army of backing the rebels in Tigray, three days before the attacks on Sudanese forces.

However, the Ethiopian government media avoid reporting on the clashes with the Sudanese army.

On the other hand, Sudan’s official news agency reported on Friday that Ethiopian seasonal workers began arriving at the Galabat crossing.

The Sudanese authorities authorized the issuance of 100,000 visas for Ethiopian workers during the harvest season.

Regarding Ethiopians fleeing the fighting in the troubled Tigray region, Sudanese humanitarian authorities said the number of refugees who crossed into Sudan has reached 54,526 refugees.

Furthermore, the daily humanitarian report published on Saturday said that the total number of refugees transferred to the Um Rakuba camp reached 20,437 people.
